Usage guide

How to use it?

Put the coffee in the portafilter, level the top with your finger. Place the tamper, apply vertical pressure (15-20 kg) — with the shoulder, not the wrist. Finish with a slight twist. A flat, shiny puck = perfect.

Should I get a 57mm or 58mm tamper?

Choose by machine: Lelit, ECM, Rocket, Profitec → 58mm. Some old/Vibiemme → 57mm. Measure the portafilter basket; even 0.1mm matters.

Calibrated or standard tamper?

Calibrated tamper (with a cartridge system) — gives a constant 15kg pressure, for beginners. Standard — the barista controls by feel, best result with experience.

What is WDT (Weiss Distribution Technique)?

Stirring the grounds with thin needles before tamping — breaks up clumps, even distribution. The Lelit PLA472A WDT + leveler works as a pair.

Difference between tamper and leveler?

Tamper → flat pressure. Leveler → only levels the top surface, applies no pressure. They are used together: leveler first, then tamper.
